SWY20th Anniversary Commemorative Projects 2008

The Ship for World Youth (SWY) program is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. International Youth Exchange Organization of Japan (IYEO) will organize series commemorative events to celebrate this special year.

  • Ship for World Youth Forest Project

  • 2nd SWYAA Global Assembly in Japan

Ship for World Youth Forest Project

Aim: Throughout the year of 2008, IYEO will organize charity events to raise 500,000 yen, which will enable the planting of a "Ship for World Youth Forest" in Bali, Indonesia. The expected size of the forest that will be planted is 0.3 hectare (3,000 sq. meters). The "Ship for World Youth Forest" will contribute to reducing the speed of global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide and emitting oxygen. It will also regenerate the forest around the lake, which will provide clean water to local residents.

Future: Ten years from now, the "Ship for World Youth Forest" would:

  • Grow larger and generate more oxygen, and also absorb more carbon dioxide

  • Some of the woods will be harvested to make timber, which will protect native forest from illegal deforestation.

  • Deserted area will be filled with green, and wild birds and animals will come back to the nature.

The tree planting in Bali will be administered with the cooperation of NPO Asian Green Forest Network, and the forest will be maintained by the Yayasan Bali Hijau Lestari (NPO) and Bali Provincial Forestry Service of Indonesia.

Port of Call Itinerary

22/02/2005
The POC is now over with a fantastic programme taking plus and everything running very smoothly. We believe this is a testament to the great relationship that existed between our AA and the CAO. The Ministry of Youth Development were heavily involved with the POC and their input in to the organisation of the POC was invaluable. It was especially great to meet some of the MYD team who helped out as guides during the POC activities.

Feedback from Ship for World Youth participants has been fantastic and a massive thanks to Nicci and the Wellington Crew for all their hard work.

Here's some memories - maybe you might like to share some too....:
* Pys giving a big round of applause when first seeing the alumni
* Abby reading the Prime Minister's statement of support to welcome the PYs
to Wellington
* An awesome welcome ceremony including awesome grooves by Toni Huata
* Guides and PYs mixing and mingling and PYs seeing our capital city for the
first time
* Stretch! ing our legs at the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary
* Boxes of wine being delivered to the boat as part of SWY17's sponsorship
efforts
* Having our families on board the boat for the first time for many of us
* NL's of all years back to SWY5 attending the POC and PYs from many years
* JYGC members meeting up on board after years of not seeing each other
* The sights/smells/feel of the Nippon Maru
* The 6th floor.....
* That wakeup call!!!! (why did we want to sleep on board again?)
* The grand bath....
* The huge buzz that PYs got from school visits and home visits....
* Cruising around Wellington and feeling like SWY *owned* the city during
free time
* The friendships we renewed with Admin, and other ex-pys on board & the new
friends we made
* The head of state in our country speaking to the PYs and encouraging young
women to become leaders and young men to do what they could to support young
women's achievements.
* The official ! (and unofficial) Cabinet Office BBQ's that saw PYs, exPYs,
and Admin side-by-side...

On the 10th April 2004 on a warm spring day in Japan Mr Paul Bartley and Miss Tomomi Sato were wed at the Kemigawa shrine.Paul was a member of the New Zealand Ship for World Youth delegation 11th prograame in 1999/1998.It was while participating in the programme that Paul met his future wife Tomomi.

The NZSWYAA would like to wish the newly weds all the best for their future together as husband and wife and would also like to acknowledge all the tremendous work that Paul and Tomomi have done and continue to do for the NZSWYAA.
Below are a few comments of Paul's thoughts of their special day.

It was a great day, a nice warm spring day, the cherry blossoms were still in bloom and everthing went as planned."Tomomi looked beautiful,as usual".
After the ceremony we had a reception at the Prince hotel in Makuhari, it was great, everyone had a great time including Tomomi & I of course.
We would like to thank everyone who helped us and everyone who came, it was a very special day for us, one that we will never forget, the best day of our lives, thank you.
